From it’s grand scale to the cozy reading nook, you will be transported to another dimension. The compound is lush, quiet, spacious and offers extraordinary views hidden behind a Volcanic rock wall with heavy iron gates. Once owned by the McClure, Wurlitzer and Howell families, the home was reverently rebuilt in 2005.  With unique design, the interior spaces are simple and large, separated by floor elevation changes instead of wall partisans.

The soft exterior adobe lines such as its buttresses, parapits and thick walls, reinforce its’ historic past. Enter through a very old, original hand carved Pueblo door, you sense the traditional adobe hacienda with large, rustic living room, bright and fun kitchen, and elegant dining room and tea bar.  Gorgeous inlaid tile designs and natural pigments give color to the slick diamond plastered walls. The huge raw wood vigas holding up the building were hauled from Taos Mountain and hand peeled and chinked at the job sight.  They are found in each room, evoking the intrinsic serenity found in nature. There are artistic statements everywhere.

Enter the “Gran Sala” Suite of four rooms including a large bedroom, a “Kama Sutra” landing, a  soaking tub with Japanese shower, and a mezzanine with sundeck. Notice the hand painted walls, inlaid local quartz, and a sculptural hand-crafted floating staircase. The Gran Sala or “boudoir”   has a set of original “Mable Dodge” double doors that open to a private dressing room with another shower, double sinks and a large walk-in closet and generous dressing area.

The Northern light bank of windows open the art studio or office to the majestic views of Taos Mountain.  Privately accessed from the Zagawa, this entrance is dramatically flanked by grand New Mexican Sand Castles.

Lastly, a very spacious  lock-off Casita/Mother-in-law suite with additional kitchen and bath can be absorbed back into the main home, but has a secured separate entrance.

Across a beautiful flagstone path and past the lily pond, find a traditional rustic New Mexican cabin.  The Gate Keepers Home is a unique guest house, solid and comfortable.  Travel back in time, but don’t sacrifice  the modern conveniences of indoor plumbing! Traditional details and heavy logs add to the coziness of this separate 1BR plus loft.

The park-like grounds are 100% organic and pesticide-free, lush and abundant with fruit trees, willows, Black Elm, Cottonwoood, and Chamisa. La Isla is settled between the two largest rivers in town, and thus sits on an unusually high water table. The estate’s pure and fresh drinking water is independently sourced form its own deep well. The informal country circle drive accesses both gate entrances, and allows one to easily cruise and view the entire property. Car covers and storage include two ramadas, separate garage and carport.

The entire home exhibits artistic attention using sustainable materials, tasteful colors, and nostalgically highlights the skills of local artisans.  This beautiful estate is completely secluded from the world, but oh so convenient to Town!
